Play-Based Multiple Subjects Tutoring

Multiple subjects tutors are available for play-based learning, academic mastery, and extracurricular activities both in home and outdoors! We serve children in elementary school grades, as well as rising Kindergartners over the summer. Tutoring is available one-on-one and in small groups up to five students. Learning by doing is encouraged for children to integate learning into their real lives. 

The tutor meets with your child outdoors at your home or nearby park, following current COVID-19 health and safety requirements, such as mask wearing, 6 ft. distancing where practicable, and frequent sanitizing. Services may also take place indoors with increased ventilation during the pandemic. Students learn English Language Arts creatively applied to multiple subjects; executive functioning (such as study skills, organization, time-management, emotion regulation, and self-awareness); and enrichment in multiple subjects. Students enjoy arts and crafts, storytelling, nature walks, science projects, dramatic play, music, and recreational gross motor play. They develop social skills and perspective taking in cooperative learning. Students spark critical thinking and creativity

through educational exploration and games. Our multiple subjects tutors are leaders who recreate aspects of the in-person school experience that your children missed during the pandemic. As a parent, you'll also enjoy tips from the tutor for helping and working with your child.

Behavioral Support and Executive Functioning

Executive functioning refers to self-management skills in which your child learns to act as his or her own coach, teacher, or "executive." Follow-up studies to the famous marshmallow test have shown that delayed gratification can be learned. Your child can learn to wait longer for preferred items and free play activities. Self-control is only one executive functioning skill. Below are some skills our tutors can teach:

    • A major concern among parents of children with disabilities is that their children are not learning enough in their classrooms, and their therapy programs cannot cover academic content. If this sounds like you, then Inspire's academic tutoring may be right for you!

    • Some tutoring companies expect children to be "ready to learn" and do not serve children who need help sitting, attending, and staying on task. These children are welcomed! Tutoring incorporates their preferences, choices, motivation, and positive reinforcement to help them learn.

  • Parents: we are game for sharing activity ideas, collaborating with you to tailor learning to your children's needs, providing daily tutoring summaries, and sharing tutoring tips with you. 

What is a Tutor, Really?

The word "tutor" may bring to mind a child quietly sitting for an hour, getting homework help while approaching death from boredom. We aim for a different approach. Dictionaries define a tutor as a private instructor. Some further define it as a one-on-one, sometimes small group, instructor who gives additional, special, or remedial instruction. A fun tutor with a playful student does not have to be a contradiction in terms! We can use our knowledge of behavioral principles to keep your child away from the tomb in tutoring and instead stay active and engaged!

Approach and Methods

Our student-centered tutoring is play-based for young children and interactive for all students. We use emergent curriculum, while integrating the Common Core. We focus not on memorization but on application. Tutoring incorporates principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), in which motivation and positive reinforcement are based on the student's preferences and choices. Comprehensive tutoring helps students catch up with remedial skills, as well as master and apply academic skills throughout their entire lives. 

Phases of Learning: Your tutoring experience may progress from assessment to mastery and beyond. 

  • Assessment: The tutor identifies baseline skills, i.e., the student's current strengths and areas of need.

  • Goals: The tutor and student or student's parents collaborate to set unique goals with mastery criteria.

  • Mastery: Every session the student practices new skills, taking a step closer to mastering goals. The tutor records the student's progress. 

  • Generalization: The tutor guides the student toward generalization, i.e., applying mastered skills in varied and novel contexts. Having learned the general principle behind a skill, the student creates and discovers ways to practice the mastered skill across diverse settings, people, instructions, and materials, in addition to producing varied and original responses. The purpose is for new skills to apply to the student's life in relevant ways.   

  • MaintenanceThe tutor checks maintenance, which is the persistence of skills over time. This is so important, considering that new skills build upon each other. The true test of learning is the independent demonstration of generalization and maintenance.

  • Independence: At Inspire, the ultimate goal is the student's independence in applying new skills, not only in academic contexts but also throughout life. The tutor's job is to gradually work herself or himself out of a job, as the student becomes more and more independent!

Locations

The tutor travels to you at your home and outdoor settings in the East Bay, following health and safety requirements. The tutor may also go on walks with your child to the open areas of a local park. Your child can also have sessions online from anywhere in Google Meet, Skype, or Zoom for interactive lessons. We do not provide center-based services.

We have a consent form for both tutors and families to follow the local and state COVID-19 health orders and CDC guidelines for everyone's health and safety. You may see the terms to receive services in person during the COVID-19 pandemic on this website. Online tutoring is also an option for increased health and safety.
