English and ESL Tutor (East Bay)

Successful candidates have a passion for English, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), linguistics, education, speech and language, or related fields and are lifelong learners. We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented English and ESL Tutor to work with PreK-12 and adult students (ages 4 to adults). This position is not ESL for adults only. Online opportunities are available, but this position also requires in-person tutoring, following local, state, and federal health and safety guidelines. Applicants looking to tutor online only will not be considered.

Essential Duties: 

  • Provide one-on-one and small group academic English and ESL tutoring for children to adults

  • Provide tutoring in English Language Arts (ELA) applied to multiple subjects 

  • Travel to students for tutoring in person in the East Bay, providing tutoring and academic enrichment activities indoors and outdoors, at students' homes or community locations, such as libraries, parks, and schools

  • Tutor online as needed

  • Punctually and reliably attend scheduled work hours, including training, meetings, and tutoring sessions

  • Assist students in mastering individualized, measurable goals in the following areas:

    • Listening, speaking, reading, and writing

    • American English phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics

    • Common Core State Standards for academic K-12 English Language Arts

    • Executive functioning and self-advocacy

  • Use principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) for skill acquisition and behavior management, such as prompting, prompt fading, and positive reinforcement based on student preferences and choices

  • Dynamically create emergent curriculum, naturalistic and incidental learning opportunities

  • Create structured learning opportunities where applicable

  • Implement play-based learning for children and interactive learning for all ages

  • Engage students with a fun teaching style and high energy, creativity, adaptability, spontaneity, dynamism, and positivity

  • Communicate student progress with children’s parents/guardians and teachers where applicable

  • Record accurate, in vivo objective data on student progress

  • Participate in ongoing training, and apply all training and supervisor feedback 

  • Follow oral and written directions 

  • Keep work materials neat, organized, and in good working condition

  • Follow all health and safety requirements

  • Communicate work-related questions, problems and concerns to supervisor in a proactive and timely manner

  • Interact and communicate in a positive and professional manner with Inspire Behavioral Learning's customers, students, parents/guardians, staff, interns, volunteers, and community partners 

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • Provide proof of Bachelor’s or Master's degree (or current major in) English, Linguistics, TESOL, Speech and Language Pathology, Education, or a related field

  • Provide your academic transcript showing a minimum 3.5 GPA, excellent grades in related courses, and good academic standing

Experience

  • Minimum of one year experience teaching or tutoring English and/or ESL

  • Experience teaching or tutoring K-6 students

  • Experience implementing emergent curriculum, naturalistic and incidental learning (or demonstrate willingness to implement them)

  • Experience teaching or tutoring culturally, linguistically, and developmentally diverse learners

  • Experience implementing effective and appropriate behavior management

Skills

  • Demonstrate fluency and command of American English phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics

  • Enthusiastic and passionate about inspiring students to achieve their full potential in school, at work, and in life

  • Kind, caring, compassionate, and patient with learners of all skill levels

  • Dynamic, energetic, creative, spontaneous, and adaptable to diverse student needs 

  • Excellent ability to break concepts down into simple and easy steps

  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Other Requirements

  • Availability at least four days per week Monday through Saturday

  • Availability at least three days per week Monday through Friday during after-school hours of 3:00 PM-7:30 PM

  • Possess your own reliable transportation to student locations in cities throughout the East Bay in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties (such as Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, Concord, etc.) 

  • Proof of automobile insurance

  • Pass a DOJ and FBI background check

  • Provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree, certificate, or current coursework in TESOL/TESL

  • Experience teaching or tutoring students with disabilities or speech and language delays
