Inspire Behavioral Learning, LLC believes in the power of the individual. You are important. Your unique perspectives and goals matter. Tutoring and behavior therapy are customized to each individual, so new skills are practical and relevant to each learner's life, whether in school, careers, or personal and social life.

To inspire learning is to inspire action! We learn best by doing, so the learner is an active participant in every lesson. Tutoring and therapy are play-based for young children. The tutor and learner are a collaborative team, with the learner's input valued every step of the way. All lessons are based on research in psychology, education, and applied behavior analysis (ABA), the science of learning. ABA focuses on measurable interaction between the learner and environment. It is effective in diverse applications, including empowering people of all ages to achieve their educational and health goals. Learners enjoy positive reinforcement based on their unique motivation, preferences, and choices. The focus is on mastering and applying new skills to promote the whole person's growth and success.

Mission

Inspire's mission is to empower people to live happier, more independent and fulfilling lives by achieving their health and educational goals.

Philosophy

At Inspire, the philosophy of care and education is to collaborate with clients and students, so that the therapist and tutor is less a "sage on the stage" and more a "guide by your side," inspiring you to achieve your dreams and goals, instilling the principles of behavior and learning in you so that you reach the independence to no longer need services.

What makes Inspire unique?

Everyone is respected as a whole person who is an integration of head, heart, and body. This is demonstrated with thoughtfulness, kindness, and dynamic action. The learner is not treated as a robot who only repeats responses. All services are brought to you where behavior occurs, and all progress is objectively determined with data. Inspire takes the guesswork out of learning.

Head: In ABA, public behavior is what other people can observe, such as speaking, while private behavior is what only you can observe, such as your thinking. At Inspire, the focus is on public behavior, while also respecting that everyone thinks. You can expect precision of thought and evidence-based practices. Data are recorded and examined on an ongoing basis for every new skill in order to determine whether progress is occurring. If progress is not occurring, the behavior analyst examines the data and the environment to determine why and modifies the treatment or teaching procedures. For the learner, problem solving and creativity are fostered.

Heart: According to the Golden Rule, treat others as you would like to be treated. According to Oscar Wilde, treat others as they would like to be treated, because they may have different tastes. The word "kindness" comes from "kin," meaning family, native, or from the same kind. However, a kind person is empathetic, compassionate, and caring towards multiple kinds of people and not only his or her own kind. At Inspire, kindness manifests in extending a circle of empathy, compassion, and care to you. Kindness manifests in respect for cultural and individual differences by promoting self-advocacy and taking into account the learner's own preferences. You can also expect heartfelt genuineness. When people ask, "How are you?" sometimes they do not care to hear your answer. At Inspire, how you are feeling and how you are doing matter.

Body: You can achieve your goals, when you follow a plan of action. What separates your dreams and reality is action. The greatest gift you will receive from Inspire is focused action. This is because learning is not merely the acquisition of new information. Learning is behavior change. At Inspire, the therapist travels to you and your child where behavior occurs, which may include your home, your child’s school, and other places in the community, such as parks, libraries, and stores. In English as a Second Language tutoring, full immersion is offered, in which the tutor may meet you in cafes, libraries, stores, and other environments in which you want to practice English. ABA takes the guesswork out of learning, because the therapist and tutor directly observe new skills in natural environments.

Inspire's mission, philosophy, and uniqueness all emerge from its values. What are these values? What are the seven characteristics of ABA?

A B O U T

Kelly Knowles has enjoyed working with children to adults, helping them achieve their goals, for twenty-one years. She has worked in ABA for eleven years. It is her passion to spark learning that makes a difference!

Education: As an undergraduate at the University of California, Davis, Kelly found herself at the crossroads of psychology and education, aspiring to combine the best of both worlds! With a BA in Psychology and a minor in Education, she soon embarked on her professional journey in ABA, when she began work as a behavior therapist for children with autism and their families. Inspired to learn more, she completed an ABA certificate at California State University, Sacramento, under Caio Miguel, one of the leading experts in verbal behavior, and Becky Penrod, one of the leading experts in pediatric behavioral feeding issues. Kelly went on to achieve an MA in behavior analysis at Florida Institute of Technology and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Kelly also completed a graduate-level certificate through UC Berkeley in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Experience: Kelly has always worked to educate. The word "educate" comes from the Latin educare, meaning to draw out or lead out. It is not only about memorizing responses. Throughout Kelly's undergraduate and graduate school years, she worked with children and adults in academics, ESL and behavioral health, discovering early on that she cared about the development of the whole person and not just academic achievement. She has provided academic English tutoring for elementary school to college and university students, including typically developing students and students with autism, English Language Learners, and children in at-risk schools. She has also enjoyed tutoring ESL for diverse learners, including native speakers of Spanish, Farsi, Russian, Lao, Korean, and Mandarin, preschool to college students, immigrants working towards U.S. Citizenship, business professionals, and an international visiting professor at UC Berkeley. She has breadth and depth of experience in ABA healthcare for infants to teens in their homes, communities, public schools, preschools, after school programs, treatment centers, and integrated play groups, as well as training parents, caregivers, and behavior therapists. She has experience with training, assessment, and supervision of Registered Behavior Technicians and BCBA candidates.

Philosophy: Kelly's philosophy is to integrate head, heart, and body to be the best version of oneself. It is her philosophy in work and in life! In her free time, Kelly enjoys hiking, photography, and spending time with her fun-loving dogs.
